A new study from the University of Queensland has revealed alarming levels of micro-plastic and nano-plastic particles shed from plastic drink bottles when exposed to boiling water. And similar behaviour has now been observed in plastic kettles.
When a kettle is new, the very first boil can release up to 3 billion nano-plastic particles into a single 250ml cup of tea or coffee. Even after 150 boils, researchers found that around 205 million particles were still leaching into each cup. These particles are incredibly small, far smaller than the human eye can see, yet they’re making their way into our bodies every day.
Why does this matter?
Growing research shows that micro-plastics can accumulate in human tissues and cells, and early evidence links long-term exposure to potential health risks, including lung and colon cancer. While more research continues, one thing is clear: reducing plastic exposure wherever possible is a smart move.
